Ludoval building toys were invented by Jean-Paul Bettens in Morges, Switzerland in the early 1970's making these toys 50+ years old. Orginally known as Modulo and then later as Ludoval, both connected to the same inventor by the patent #4,044,497 filed Nov. 24, 1975. Ludoval appears to have been acquired by Fisher-Price around 1983 and branded as
Construx
which became wildly popular around the world.
Construx
was said to be discontinued in 1988 and later acquired by Mattel around 1997 for a short period of time before being discountinued again. No one has a clear answer why Construx, one of the most popular toys, was discontinued but it certainly was'nt related to a lack of sales as almost every kid in the 80's had a set of Construx. Construx even had TV commercials and made it into McDonalds happy meals. Information related to Modulo and Ludoval toys is very limited and the only data we have is from the patent documentation.
